The term binge drinking is however ascribed to two separate meanings within the academic literature. It is used to describe a purposeful pattern of heavy drinking that takes place over an extended period normally defined as drinking extending beyond a day at a time.Binge drinking is indentified as the number one health hazard for American college students today. For men binge is defined as having five or more drinks in a row.Binge drinking is defined by the NHS (2011) as the consumption of “eight or more units in a single session for men and six or more for women”. It has been argued to have negative effects upon the health of individuals as well as negative effects upon society, such as causing accidents, unsafe sex and violence (Norman, Bennett and Lewis, 1998).
Binge drinking, or drinking for the purpose of getting drunk, harms both drinkers and non-drinkers alike. As today's college students come dangerously close to being swept away in the sea of papers, exams, jobs, and interviews, they use bingeing as the lifeboat that allows them to escape the stress.Binge Drinking is highly dangerous and unhealthy for students and others who are around them. Not only can binge drinking lead to death, their are unhealthy side effects that arise from binging. Drinking damages the brain, heart, and kidneys. Other effects of binge drinking are blackouts, vomiting, unwanted sex, and driving accidents.
Binge drinking results from a student’s submission to peer pressure, the lack of outside control over the student, and the denial that drinking leads to severe consequences. Binge drinking is defined as five or more drinks in a row for men and four or more drinks in a row for women in about two hours.
